Remembering
The Slave Trade

Last week saw UNESCO observing August 23 as the ‘International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition’. The slave trade was a shameful practice in which the vulnerable and defenceless were taken from their homelands and traded for goods or money.

The trade in people from Africa is what most of us know about but, as we shall see, the trade of slaves has existed for millennia and is alive today too because of human trafficking.
