The Grand Mosque or 'Masjid al-Haram' complex is built around the Ka'aba. It covers an area of 356,800 square meters and can accommodate up to 820,000 worshippers at any given time. Another 1.2 million can pray in the outer complex.

The entire mosque complex is thoroughly washed and sanitised at least thrice a day and is done simultaneously, even as pilgrims pray while circling the Ka'aba. The system is so efficient that in a matter of a few minutes, the entire complex is ready to host more pilgrims.

After completing seven circumambulations of the Ka’aba, pilgrims offer prayers at the ‘Maqam-e-Ibrahim’ or the Station of Abraham. Muslims believe that Prophet Abraham stood on this stone slab while building the upper walls of the Ka’aba.
